National Indigenous Peoples Day in Winnipeg: Attend With Care

Find public programming, listen to hosts and plan a respectful June 21 visit.

← Summer in Winnipeg

National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 recognizes the histories, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. In Winnipeg, public programming offers opportunities to celebrate and learn, including events announced by The Forks.

Choose an invitation that is public

Read the current event description and follow the host organization’s directions. A publicly advertised performance, workshop and ceremony may have different expectations. Do not assume that every gathering is open for drop-in participation or photography.

Listen to the people presenting

Pay attention to introductions and the context shared by artists and hosts. Ask respectful questions when an opportunity is offered, and avoid treating distinct communities and traditions as a single interchangeable culture. If guidance is given about standing, sitting or putting a camera away, follow it.

Make a practical day plan

Choose a few confirmed activities and allow time between them. For busy programming at The Forks, consider the organizer’s transportation advice and agree on a meeting point with friends. Check access needs and weather arrangements before leaving.

Families can prepare by talking about listening and asking permission before taking close-up photographs. Afterwards, choose one subject introduced during the visit to learn more about from an Indigenous-led source. The annual date is fixed, but venues, schedules and hosts can change. Use the current invitations rather than circulating an older program as if it were this year’s schedule.
